IS 381 School Cell Phone/Electronic Device Policy

According to Chancellor's Regulation A-413, students are permitted to bring the following electronic items to school: cell phones, laptops, tablets, iPads, and other similar computing devices, and portable music and entertainment systems.  With the exception of cell phones, all other electronic devices are NOT permitted on school property.  School administration has the duty to put a system in place to manage the proper use of cell phones.  We would like to share our school based cell phone policy for the 2022-2023 School Year.

Phones are NOT to be used during school hours.  Every students is assigned a personal Yondr Pouch.  The Yondr Pouch is school property.  It is every student's responsibility to bring their Pouch with them to school daily and keep it in good working condition.

DAILY PROCESS

As students arrive at school, they will:

  1. Turn their cell phone off before entering the building.
  2. Place their cell phone and other wearable technology, including ear pods, smart watches, etc., inside their Pouch and secure it in front of school staff.
  3. Store their Pouch in their backpack for the day.

As students are dismissed from school:

  1. Assigned staff members will open students Pouches as they exit the building.
  2. Students will remove their phone and put their Pouch in their backpack.  Students must bring their Pouch to school with them every day.

If any student arrives late to the school building or is picked up early, they will pouch/un-pouch in the Main Office, Room 328.

VIOLATIONS

  • If a student damages or loses their Pouch, the student's parent and/or guardian must pay for the cost of the replacement. Each Pouch has a cost of $25.  Examples of damage include, but are not limited to: ripping, cut, torn, pen/pencil marks, bent or cut pin, signs of force to the black button on the flap.
  • If a student is caught using their phone and/or wearable technology such as ear pods during school hours, the device(s) will be confiscated by Administration.
  • It is the student's responsibility to contact their parent or guardian and inform them of the confiscation.  Students may call from the Main Office (room 328).
  • The phone/device will be placed in a secure location until the parent or guardian can retrieve it, at which time there will be a Parent Conference with Administration.
  • Students who forget their Pouch at home will have their devices collected and locked up for the day.  The device will be returned to the student after dismissal.  Students can pick their device up from the Main Office.

Attendance Policy

Welcome to the 2024-25 School Year!

We are excited to share our school’s Attendance policy and plan that will provide the needed information and guidance to help your child attend daily!

OUR SCHOOL COMMUNITY’S ATTENDANCE GOAL

Attendance matters! Missing a day of school means missing a day of instruction.  Research shows that students who attend regularly achieve greater success in school and in life. Our school’s collective goal for attendance remains the same. Whether in-person or remote, we want every child attending school regularly!

ATTENDANCE TAKING

Each Morning from 8:00-8:05 AM attendance is taken. (During Inclement weather the time is extended) Attendance is taken again during 3rd period as a backup for any student that did not obtain a late pass during morning entrance.

ATTENDANCE DEFINITIONS

Present In Person Student is physically present in the classroom for at least one full period.

Present RemoteStudent attends virtually synchronous or asynchronous instruction for the equivalent of at least one full instructional period during the scheduled program day.

Absent In-Person: A student that is not physically present in the classroom for instruction during the scheduled school day.

Absent Remote:  Student is not virtually present for synchronous or asynchronous instruction

1. Synchronous instruction is defined as live interaction between the teacher and student(s) each day at a scheduled time, communicated in advance to parents and students. For more information, please contact the school.

2. Asynchronous learning refers to instruction and learning opportunities that are not centered on students and teachers interacting at the same time. Asynchronous learning activities enable students to work at their own pace so they can learn the same material at different times independently.

COMMUNICATION WITH FAMILIES

Attendance Information is available on NYSCA.

Parents will receive texts/emails by 11:00AM if their child was marked absent or late. There is an attendance team in place that will reach out to families once a month if there are noticeable trends of absences or lateness. It is very important for the school to have updated contact information, so if there are any changes to your address or phone number please contact Symone Lopez @ 718-338-1534

During parent-teacher conferences, we will share information regarding your child’s attendance and discuss how we as a school community can be most helpful in creating the conditions for your child to attend regularly and thrive in school.  Teacher’s also will reach out to families during parent engagement time to complete outreach.

ABSENCES

If you know your child is going to miss school on a certain day or will be missing school for an extended period of time, please notify the school in advance by:

Emailing [email protected] in addition to all of the students' teachers, and calling the Main Office at 718-338-1534

Please provide information explaining the reason for your child's absence, in order for it to be marked as excused or unexcused.

  • Excused Absence: Absence may be excused for reasons including illness/injury, family emergency, religious observation,  or pre-arranged appointments.
  • Unexcused Absence: Unexcused absence is when no information is provided.

LATENESS

If a student is late, they are required report to the Main Office for a late pass in order to not be marked absent.

LEAVING EARLY

If your child is getting picked up early, the designee picking them up MUST be 18 years of age or older, on the Emergency Contact Card, and have their photo ID.

ATTENDANCE AND MAKE-UP WORK

Frequents lateness and absences from class may result in a lower grade average due to the loss of important classroom instructional time (i.e. classroom participation, exams, quizzes, group work, etc.) Students are not required to make up the hours of missed classwork, but will only receive credit if the make-up work meets the required standards.

PERSONALIZED SUPPORTS

Students who are frequently absent will be assigned to a member of the Attendance Team, composed of caring adults who will support students in reducing absenteeism through outreach, counseling and emotional support.

CELEBRATIONS

Students are encouraged to maintain perfect attendance and will be awarded monthly.

PARTNERING WITH COMMUNITIES

I.S. 381 has many partnerships with local groups to maximize social and emotional growth amongst our scholars.  Girl be Heard, New York EDGE after school program and the C.H.A.M.P.S program are in place to support students both before AND after school.  Furthermore, I.S. 381 has an after school STEAM Academy to support students both academically and socially. Students will be linked to enrichment clubs and academic support in both the AM and PM if needed.

We hope this information is helpful to you! If you have questions about our attendance plan, please contact us!
